Try the First Steps of Your Daisy Days Bandana

A peek at the first steps. New to these stitches? Every one is taught free in our beginner crochet course.

What you'll need

  • Yarn in the weight the pattern lists
  • A crochet hook in the matching size
  • A yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers
  1. A small yellow crochet circle made in a magic ring for the daisy center

    Step 1: The sunny center

Rnd 1 (yarn A): Make a magic ring. Ch 1 (doesn't count as a st), 8 sc in the ring. Pull the tail to close, then sl st to the first sc. [8 sts]

Fasten off, leaving a 10 cm (4 in) tail. Weave the starting tail in now — the center is tiny and much easier to tidy before the petals arrive.

Tip: Pull the ring really tight. A little hole in the middle of a daisy is the #1 sign of a rushed center.

  2. A crochet daisy with eight cream puff-stitch petals around a yellow center

    Step 2: Puffy petals

Rnd 2 (yarn B): Join B with a sl st in any sc. Ch 2 (doesn't count as a st), puff st in the same st, ch 2. [Puff st in next st, ch 2] 7 times. Sl st to the top of the first puff. [8 puffs]

Fasten off. You now have a little 8-petal daisy, about 5 cm (2 in) across, with a ch-2 space between each pair of petals.

Tip: Pull every loop up to the same height — about 1.5 cm (⅝ in). Even loops make plump, matching petals.

  3. The daisy worked into a powder-blue granny square with corner spaces

    Step 3: Squaring the circle

Rnd 3 (yarn C): Join C with a sl st in any ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same sp — your first corner. 3 dc in next ch-2 sp. *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp; rep from * 2 more times. Sl st to the top of the beg ch-3. [36 dc]

That's 9 dc on each side, with a ch-2 space at every corner.

Tip: Corners go in every other space — say it as you go: corner, side, corner, side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a physical bandana?

No. It's a digital PDF pattern: the step-by-step instructions to crochet the bandana yourself. Nothing is shipped.

Do I get it instantly?

Yes. Your download link appears on the order confirmation page right after checkout, and it's emailed to you too.

I've never made a granny square. Can I do this?

Yes! If you can chain, single crochet and double crochet, you can make this bandana. The technique guide explains every stitch with a photo, and QR codes link to free video tutorials.

The puffy petals look tricky.

They're just a few loops pulled up to the same height and closed together. The pattern shows it step by step, with a photo, so you'll have them down by your second daisy.

What do I need?

DK (#3) cotton in 3 colours: about 6 m of yellow, 22 m of cream and 150 m of powder blue (two 50 g balls). Plus a 4 mm (US G/6) hook, a tapestry needle, a few stitch markers, blocking mats and rust-proof pins. For the bonus scrunchie, add one hair elastic.

What size is it?

The Classic size is about 58 × 30 cm (23 × 12 in), plus two 33 cm (13 in) ties. The pattern also includes a Little size (kids and teens) and a Wrap size.

Can I use a different yarn or make it bigger?

Yes. Any smooth DK cotton works. The size guide covers the Little, Classic and Wrap sizes, and shows how sport or worsted yarn changes the finished size.

How long does it take?

About 6–8 hours in total, or around 30 minutes per daisy square.

Is it safe for children?

It's not suitable for babies or young children: the ties can be a strangulation hazard. Never leave a bandana on a sleeping child.

Can I sell what I make?

Absolutely. The commercial-use license lets you sell finished bandanas (and the bonus scrunchies) at markets, fairs and online. Please credit "Pattern by Yarnly Crochet", and don't share, copy or resell the pattern itself.

US or UK crochet terms?

Both. The pattern uses US terms, and a full UK-terms version is included.

I'm stuck. Can you help?

Of course. The troubleshooting table covers the 12 most common hiccups, and you can always send us a message with a photo through our contact page.
