A peek at the first steps. New to these stitches? Every one is taught free in our beginner crochet course.

What you'll need

  • Yarn in the weight the pattern lists
  • A crochet hook in the matching size
  • A yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers
  1. Hands making a pink foundation chain on a 5 mm hook, with a locking marker on the slip-knot tail

    Step 1: The foundation chain

Row 1 (cake 1, light end): Make a slip knot and ch 6. [6 ch]

Count from the hook: chains 1, 2 and 3 are skipped, and your first dc goes into the 4th chain.

Tip: Clip a locking marker onto the slip-knot tail. It marks the bottom point of your shawl.

  2. The first C2C tile, three pink double crochets standing on the chain, held on the hook

    Step 2: Your first tile

Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 2 ch. Turn. [1 tile, 1 total]

Tip: The 3 chains you skipped stand up beside your dc. That's your first ch-3 space; you'll work into it in Row 2.

  3. A new edge tile made right beside the first C2C tile, two pink tiles on the hook

    Step 3: A brand-new edge tile

Row 2: Ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 2 ch. [1 of 2 tiles]

Tip: This is how every row starts: a chain-6 and 3 dc make a new tile at the edge, right beside your first tile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a physical shawl?

No. It's a digital PDF pattern: the step-by-step instructions to crochet the shawl yourself. Nothing is shipped.

Do I get it instantly?

Yes. Your download link appears on the order confirmation page right after checkout, and it's emailed to you too.

I've never made a shawl. Can I really do this?

Yes! It uses only three basic stitches and one small repeat. The first three rows are shown step by step with photos and tile maps, and after that every row is the same. Your only count is simple: the tiles in a row equal the row number.

Do I have to plan colour changes?

No. A gradient yarn cake changes colour on its own. The pattern includes a simple gradient plan that shows which end of each cake to start from, so the fade stays smooth when you join your second cake.

What do I need?

DK (#3) gradient yarn: 2 cakes of Lion Brand Mandala (150 g / 540 m each) for the standard size. Plus a 5 mm (US H/8) hook, a tapestry needle, 4–8 locking stitch markers, scissors and a tape measure. Optional: blocking mats, rust-proof pins, a spray bottle or steam iron, and a piece of stiff card for the tassels.

What size is it, and how long does it take?

The standard shawl is about 163 × 81 cm (64 × 32 in) before tassels and takes about 12–16 hours. The pattern also includes a scarf-style small (102 × 51 cm / 40 × 20 in, about 5–7 hours) and an oversized wrap (204 × 102 cm / 80 × 40 in, about 18–24 hours).

Can I use a different yarn or make it bigger or smaller?

Yes. Any smooth DK yarn works, and you can stop at any row. The pattern gives three sizes and a budget striped option in worsted solids. As a rule of thumb, every row adds about 1 inch (2.5 cm) to the top edge.

I'm left-handed. Will this work for me?

Yes. The pattern works exactly the same, just mirrored, and the video page links to tutorials that include left-handed versions.

How do I care for the finished shawl?

Care notes are inside: acrylic yarn like Mandala can be machine washed on gentle in a mesh bag, and your shawl keeps its shape best stored folded, not hung. Keep acrylic away from high heat, and if you make one for a baby or small child, skip the tassels and weave all ends in securely.

Can I sell what I make?

Absolutely. The commercial-use license lets you sell finished shawls and kerchiefs at markets, fairs and online. Please credit "Pattern by Yarnly Crochet", and don't share, copy or resell the pattern itself.

US or UK crochet terms?

Both. The pattern uses US terms, and the full pattern in UK terms is included at the back as a compact quick-reference.

I'm stuck. Can you help?

Of course. The troubleshooting table covers 12 common mistakes and easy fixes, and you can always send us a message with a photo through our contact page.
